In Record Time to the North Sea
Gebrüder Weiss and ICA launching a new rail connection for seafreight containers: the „Hamburg-Lake Constance Sprinter”
Gebrüder Weiss continues to further its market leadership in seafreight: a direct rail connection between Wolfurt and Hamburg to debut on 4 September will mean faster transit times to the German seaport. And up to 5,000 less truck runs per year.
It all begins on 4 September: at 5:00 p.m., the first "Hamburg-Lake Constance Sprinter" will leave the Wolfurt freight depot. The container train, an initiative from Gebrüder Weiss and the Intercontainer Austria (ICA) container organiser, directly connects the Lake Constance region with Hamburg. "We're starting with two Wolfurt-Hamburg runs per week," reports Harald Kostial, GW Product Manager for Seafreight. "Medium-term plans are focused on daily departures."
Shorter transit times
The "Hamburg-Lake Constance Sprinter" brings a rail shuttle system based on a fixed wagon configuration, and thus one providing clearly improved service quality, to the Lake Constance region for the first time. The main goal of the initiators is to get every container now being transported to Hamburg through the container terminals in Southern Germany and Switzerland off the highways and onto the railways. ”There is the potential of doing away with about 5,000 truck runs per year,” according to ICA Managing Director Günter Watzl. In addition to the "Hamburg-Lake Constance Sprinter", ICA operates another 150 block trains each week, the new product supplementing their existing range of products.
